In June 2017, MAN Diesel & Turbo acquired a 40 percent participation of the Canadian company Aspin Kemp & Associates (AKA), based in Montague, Prince Edward Island.
Being specialized in power supply, energy management and drive systems for marine applications, AKA is a world market leader in equipping diesel-hybrid powered ship propulsion systems with integrated battery storage in addition to highly reliable on-board power systems for dynamic-positioning applications in the marine and offshore oil & gas sectors. The company is also technologically leading in the field of energy storage and hybrid power solutions for a broader range of marine and land-based applications. AKA's know-how concerning electric and hybrid systems and MAN Diesel & Turbo experience in propulsion solutions will strengthen its positions in the field of marine propulsion.
“AKA's specialized expertise links battery storage systems and marine engines. The new cooperation marks an important step on the way to further establish ourselves as a principal system supplier for energy management on board ships", explains Dr. Uwe Lauber, CEO of MAN Diesel & Turbo.
Providing fully automatic control and by optimizing the power distribution of drive components of ships, a sophisticated energy management system not only improves efficiency but also reduces the environmental footprint. With respect to the global trend of decarbonisation, a best-developed energy management system is the essential aspect for future technology.
